Comment:

Ted, you are an idiot.Suggesting flu shots or other vaccines cause Alzheimers or cancer only promotes hysteria and irrational thoughts regarding vaccinations. If you could succeed in convincing enough people to forego immunizations and preventative measures you would only increase morbidity and cause unnecessary and preventable deaths. Strong data is available regarding safety and efficacy of these steps in prevention. Why don’t you suggest that having a spine manipulation causes HIV or stepping on a crack breaks your mothers back. Keep up the good work in spewing nonsense.

Tedd Koren responds.

I couldn’t have paid someone to write such a silly post. First of all he spells my name wrong. It’s Tedd with two ds. I guess that sets the stage.

The literature relating mercury and aluminum to Alzheimer’s has been growing. Dr. High Fudenberg (MD) the world’s leading immuno-geneticist with over 850 papers published in the world’s most renown bio-medical journals has reported the link between flu shots and Alzheimer’s – and he’s not the only one seeing such a link.

Mortality and morbidity studies from Life Insurance companies of the 19th and 20th centuries (they kept the best records) and from government epidemiologists later on repeatedly show that deaths from infectious diseases of childhood – pertussis, measles, mumps etc had decreased 95-99% before mass vaccination. Vaccines can claim no credit. After all no one was being vaccinated and the deaths rates continued dropping – that is unless you think the vaccines work backwards in time.

However chronic illnesses linked to vaccination have repeated risen – from allergies, asthma, autism, learning disorders, diabetes to heart disease and cancer (and so much more) have increased dramatically as we continue to vaccinate younger generations. To that list we must (sadly) include Alzheimers and dementia.

The studies supposedly “proving” the safety and efficacy of vaccination are so flawed as to be considered fraud. They are akin to the cigarette companies producing studies “proving” that smoking doesn’t cause any health problems. Of course junk science can “prove” anything but when the actual studies are dissected we find they aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. I invite the above write to show me what he is basing his statements on.

The next to the last sentence is a nonsense “straw man” argument which entails making a ridiculous claim and then attacking it.

Thanks for writing. Please write more.

This headline struck me: Dementia Cases to Double Every 20 Years.

Below is the rest of the newspaper article. Apparently longer life spans cause dementia – even though this is a relatively new phenomenon. Since when did old age cause dementia?

No mention of the link between vaccines (including the flu shot) and dementia. Oh no- the implication is that medicine is keeping us living longer (not healthier, they don’t go that far) and that because we are living longer we’re getting cancer and dementia since they are diseases of old age.

I’ve heard that bogus argument before. What about all the increases in childhood cancers? What about the people in their 30s and 40s now being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s?

Why doesn’t anyone suggest that medical care might be causing these problems? Especially all the drugs given to the elderly? Ah – uncomfortable questions.

Anyway here’s the rest of the article.

(Sept. 21, 2009) — The number of people with dementia globally is estimated to nearly double every 20 years, according to a report released Monday for World Alzheimer’s Day. Much of the growth will be fueled by longer life spans and population growth, especially in developing nations.

Over the next 20 years, the numbers of people with dementia are anticipated to increase by 40 percent in Europe, 63 percent in North America, 77 percent in the southern Latin America … and 89 percent in the developed Asia Pacific countries,” said the report, from Alzheimer’s Disease International.

“In comparison, the percentage increase is expected to be 117 percent in East Asia, 107 percent in South Asia, 134-146 percent in the rest of Latin America, and 125 percent in North Africa and the Middle East.”
By 2010, an estimated 35.6 million people around the world will be living with dementia. The number is expected to hit 65.7 million in 2030 and 115.4 million in 2050. One in seven Americans age 71 and older, or about 3.4 million, have dementia, according to the National Institutes of Health. In this age group, 2.4 million people have Alzheimer’s disease, NIH research has shown. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, according to the Mayo Clinic.

This is a wonderful article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal on the benefits of natural healing. Enjoy it.

What cures colds, flu, sore throats, sore muscles, headaches, stomach aches, diarrhea, menstrual cramps, hangovers, back pain, jaw pain, tennis elbow, blisters, acne and colic, costs nothing, has no weird side effects and doesn’t require a prescription?

Plain old-fashioned time. But it’s often the hardest medicine for patients to take.

“Most people’s bodies and immune systems are wonderful in terms of handling things—if people can be patient,” says Ted Epperly, a family physician in Boise, Idaho, and president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

“I have a mantra: You can do more for yourself than I can do for you,” says Raymond Scalettar, a Washington, D.C., rheumatologist and former chairman of the American Medical Association. But, he says, “some patients are very medicine-oriented, and when you tell them they aren’t good candidates for a drug they’ve heard about on TV, they don’t come back.”

An estimated one-third to one-half of the $2.2 trillion Americans spend annually on health care in the U.S. is spent on unnecessary tests, treatments and doctor visits. Much of that merely buys time for the body to heal itself.

Almost all viral infections resolve on their own, unless you have a compromised immune system. As a rule of thumb, Dr. Epperly says, infections in the nose, throat, stomach and upper respiratory tract tend to be viral. Infections elsewhere in the body are likely to be caused by bacteria, and those can get worse without antibiotics. About 80% of urinary-tract infections resolve on their own, for example, but about 20% develop into more serious kidney or blood infections. And even if they don’t, the symptoms can be very uncomfortable …

Parents are often extremely eager to “do something” for children who complain of sniffles, stomach aches, scrapes and fevers. Yet kids are generally very resilient, writes Lara Zibners, an emergency pediatrician, in her book.

Life expectancy in the United States rose to an all-time high, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today. But that’s only half the story.

The country is behind about 30 others on this measure.

Though the United States has by far the highest level of health care spending per capita in the world, we have one of the lowest life expectancies among developed nations – lower than Italy, Spain and Cuba and just a smidgeon ahead of Chile, Costa Rica and Slovenia, according to the United Nations. China does almost as well as we do. Japan tops the list at 83 years.

In fact, U.S. life expectancy gains may be pretty much over, as some groups – particularly people in rural locations – are already stagnating or slipping, explains LiveScience columnist Christopher Wanjek. Meantime, soaring rates of obesity and diabetes among children and adults, owing mostly to lousy diets and lack of exercise, portend depressing mortality rates to come.

The children were re-examined and 95% of the eardrums had returned to normal along with a decrease in average temperature to 98.6ºF. Before receiving the adjustments, the severity of the symptoms in the children was rated at an average of 7.524 on a 0-10 point scale.

Mothers give their babies immunity to viral illnesses through breast milk and if a baby is sick the mother produces much more immune cells for the baby. In one study the breast milk of mothers with sick babies had a four- to five-fold increase in the total number of white blood cells – which help protect against viral and bacterial infections – compared to the healthy control mothers. Apparently there is an unknown feedback mechanism from the baby to the mother. When the baby is sick the mother’s body somehow knows it and begins to create more immune-fighting chemicals for the baby.

Friendship. As important as good nutrition and exercise are close friends and relatives. More studies show that those with a large number of friends, relatives and other social ties live a longer, healthier life. Harvard researchers investigated the effect of social ties, death and heart disease, in a 10-year follow-up study of nearly 30,000 men. Those who were more socially isolated were nearly 20% more likely to die from any cause and 53% more likely to die from a heart-related cause than those who reported the highest number of social ties. Those with a moderately low number of social connections had a more than twofold greater risk of death from accidents and suicides than did their peers with the most social ties.

Overall, married men reportedly had a lower risk of death from any cause and a greater than twofold reduced risk of death from accidents and suicides than their unmarried peers. In addition, men who attended at least one religious service per year and those who spent at least 11 hours per week participating in some type of social group also seemed to be protected against all causes of death. Social isolation is a ‘risk factor’ for ill health that deserves as much attention as other risk factors for cardiovascular disease and other ailments.

(Koren Publications’ forthcoming Myth-Busting Swine Flu Report written by Tedd Koren DC,will discuss more swine flu issues. See here for other vaccination learning materials and here for brochures.)

Colds and flu afford cancer protection

In the below study, it was found that those who had colds and flu had less breast, colon, rectum, stomach and ovarian cancer. Again, colds and the flu help the body cleanse toxins.

A history of common colds or influenza prior to the interview was found to be associated with a decreased cancer risk. Abel U, Becker N, Angerer R et al. Common infections in the history of cancer patients and controls. J Cancer Res Clin Oncol. 1991;117(4);339-344.

This begs the question, are we really doing our kids (and ourselves) a favor when we vaccinate against relatively benign childhood diseases and the flu or are we setting ourselves up for cancer?

The below study from the International Journal of Cancer showed that subjects who reported a history of infectious diseases (colds and flu) had 30% less chance of getting brain tumors.

Subjects who reported a history of infectious diseases (e.g. colds, flu) showed a 30% reduction in risk [of brain tumor]. Schlehoper B, Blettner M, Preston-Martin Set al. Role of medical history in brain tumor development results from the international adult brain tumor study. International Journal of Cancer. 1999;82:155-160.

Simply by suppressing fever interferes with your body’s ability to destroy infection and can keep you sick longer. In study it was found that taking aspirin or Tylenol™ for the flu could prolong your illness by up to 3½ days. Plaisance KI et al. Effect of antipyretic therapy on the duration of illness in experimental influenza A, Shigella connei, and Rickettsia rickettsii infections. Pharmacotherapy. 2000;20(12):1417-1433.

When we are dealing with acute infectious illness the best policy is letting our body express illness. Properly expressed we get better faster and leave a healthier, cleaner, stronger person it’s wake.

In our mad dash to protect people from symptoms we should pause and reflect on the wisdom of the body. Symptoms are the way the body heals and by suppressing disease symptoms we may be deeper, more serious illness later on.

A doctor wrote to me with this request: “Could you do an article comparing high and low velocity adjustment techniques, Please?” Richard.

(For those of you who don’t know, this is a fancy way of saying whether a lot or a little force is used in the adjustment. An example of a high force/velocity technique is “diversified” (cracking), while an example of a low force/velocity technique is Koren Specific Technique (KST).)

My response:

Dear Richard,

That is a valid question and a void in our profession. I don’t think the profession has done any inter-technique studies. How do you compare one technique to another? How do we know if one technique is better than another?

That is very important because schools teach a “core” technique curriculum. And there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which techniques are approved and which rejected. No one is testing new techniques, new discoveries – it’s just a “what the hell, this seems to work” attitude pervading the schools.

I know this because I entered the world of teaching chiropractors how to adjust when I started teaching KST (Koren Specific Technique).

Getting KST approved for different states and schools is an exercise in insanity. Approval process? There is no process.

One school said that they would only approve KST if it were different than other techniques.

Another school said that they would only approve KST if it was similar to other techniques.

What’s a teacher to do? There are similarities and there are differences – you just try to answer their forms in such a way so that the jaded bureaucrats don’t raise an eyebrow.

KST is low force and doctors who used to do “diversified” (cracking) tell me that KST is far superior and that for every one patient who enjoys “a good crack”, tenty patient are staying out of your office because of it. However, I don’t know of any studies that were set up to test one technique against the other. If there were I’m sure KST would win hands down.
